Abstract: Effect of hot fluid flow velocity direction have been investigated to determine the characteristics of shell and tube heat exchanger. Experimental study examined by varying hot fluid velocity (V) = 0.011 to 0.037 m / s on the hot fluid inlet temperature (Thi) = 363K. The experimental results demonstrated by the increasing speed of the flow direction of hot fluid on the hot fluid inlet temperature is constant, then the characteristics of the heat exchanger; Reynolds number (Re), Nusselt number (Nu), convection coefficient (h), overall heat transfer coefficient (U), heat transfer rate (q) and effectiveness (e) increase with the gradient increased significantly. This condition occurs at a speed (V) < 0037 m/s and the characteristics of optimal heat exchanger at a speed (V) = 0.037 m/s and minimum speed (V) = 0.011. The increasing velocity (V) direction flow of hot fluid on the hot fluid inlet temperature constant, the heat transfer characteristics of the accelerated ie, Re,h increased 25.1%, Nu,h increased by 35.64%, increased by 35.79% hi, Re,c increased by 28, 32%, Nu,c 36.90%, ho increased by 36.75%, U increased 35.81, q increased by 25.09% and increasing fluid velocity (V) < .030 m/s heat exchanger effectiveness (e) 20:41% while increasing the fluid velocity (V) > 0.030 m/s no significant impact on effectiveness.
