Abstract: Introduction: Communication skills for doctors are core competencies that should be achieved in competence-based medical curriculum. This skills tightly correlate with the quality of health management and patient safety. In student-centered learning, students need to assess themselves on how their progress and achievement in skills being trained to them. Self-assessment helps students to evaluate and plan for their improvement in mastering the skills. This study aimed at comparing students self-assessment to examiner assessment of communication skills, whether it can be recommended as additional assessment approach to Data Gathering skills. Methods: This study is an action based research used experimental approach. Communication skills rating scale was used as measuring instrument. Forty-four semester 2 (year 2011) students assessed themselves in demonstrating data-gathering skills examination. Used the same rating scale, examiner assess the same demonstration of skills. Advance to the examination, students were trained in two skills training sessions. The sessions were concluded with the utilization of the rating-scale and practice on self-assessment. Students self-assessment and examiner assessment were compared using Wilcoxon test. Results: The Wilcoxon test shows no significant difference between self-assessment and examiner assessment (p>0.05) for 11 items of the rating scale, while for three other items named "non-verbal expression", "psychological issue" and "repetition of words" there was a significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the result, it can be concluded that self-assessment was effective as assessment method besides examiner examination. However, clear and further training on the aspect of "nonverbal expression", "psychological issue" and "repetition of words" should be done to improve students' skills and interpretation on communicating and gathering data.
