Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between growth and pigment content of red seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) which affected this plant to live in different seawater depths. This experiment was designed to utilize a suspension tiered raft which placed side by side at different depths. A number of green and brown shoots of K. alvarezii were used as seeds with the initial weight of 50, 100 and 150g. Analysis of growth rate based on 100, 250, 400, 550 and 700cm depths, and pigment contents were measured at the depth of 100, 400 and 700cm. The results showed that the highest daily growth rate on average for green strain occurred at the initial weight of 100g as much as 5.28%, followed by 50g (3.58%) and 150g (2.52%), whereas for brown strain appeared at the initial weight of 100g (5.45%), followed by 50g (4.86%) and 150g (4.43%). The content of chlorophyll a in both plants was not different at three depths. Carotenoid content increases in both plants according to the depth while the content of phycoerythrin which based on absorption level was too little to count following their application to the formula. One may assume that this type of seaweed cultivation can be performed in deeper-water with more benefits than those culturing in shallow-water.
