Abstract: Steel ST 42 specified to the low carbon steel with carbon content of 0.2-0.3%. Steel is commonly used in public constructions, so its use is required to improve the mechanical properties. By way of pack carurizing to increase the solidity of the material. Solid carbonation is simplest carbonation method, which is using active carbon powder as the addition of carbon element. But there are obstacles in this process, which is very difficult to obtain active carbon powder in certain areas. For its purpose, an easily alternative available around us like a charcoal shell, coconut shell charcoal, and walnut shell charcoal. The purpose of this research is to obtain the solidity values from each media used, so that we can compare the changes of every solidity values obtained and then can determine the solid media carbonation a better alternative to increase the solidity value of steel ST 42. Carbonation intensive process carried out at heating temperature 925 oC and held for 6 hours and then immersed in oil. Testing the solidity done to produce the distribution of solidity values for each different solid media. The results of this study show that by using shell charcoal as a media of solid carbonation steel ST 42 can increase the value of solidity from 84.61 to 129.29 HRC HRC or an increase in solidity for 52.8% of the initial solidity value.
