Abstract: The aim of this research is to study the influence of terrain factors on the development of settlements, terrain suitability classes, and to evaluate terrain units that are suitable for alternative settlement development in the town of Namlea and its surroundings. The survey method used in this research is based on the principle of stratified random sampling. The mapping units that are used to subdivide the study area are landscape units in which physical characteristics of the terrain are reflected. The study area consists of three landscapes of marine, fluvial and denudational origin, each divided in landforms and subdivided further into terrain units. The research concentrates on 33 terrain units. The results of the suitability evaluation show that 18 units have a high suitability (S1; 33 %), 11 units have a moderate suitability (S2; 55 %), and 4 units have a marginal suitability (S3; 12 %). The results of the research further show that the main limiting factors for units with a moderate suitability are: ground water level, slope steepness, and soil texture, whereas slope is the main determining factor for units with marginal suitability. Alternative allocation of land for settlement and development is prioritized on the basis of limiting factors that can be improved with simple techniques and low investment.
