Abstract: Indonesia is an archipelago country, approximately 70% of its area is sea. Because of that Indonesian has an opportunity to develop the potential of marine resources. One of them is seaweed. Seaweed consists of many species with different benefits for health. One of the known species of seaweed that are beneficial to human health is Sargassum algae. As its socioeconomic situation is improving, Indonesia is now in an epidemiological transition, having the double burden of infectious and emerging non-communicable, diseases especially cardiovascular, diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that in 2030, the people with cardiovascular problems will increase to 23 million people worldwide. It also predicted that 76 percent or 17.5 million cases of heart disease will occur in developing countries. Based on the Ministry of Health Primary Health Research 2010, heart disease is still the first cause of death in Indonesia with the prevalence rate reaching 7.2 percent. Therefore this article will discuss the potential benefits of Sargassum sp. as functional food for cardiovascular disease.
