Although currently, data on incidence, prevalence and mortality of TB has declined, but tuberculosis remains unresolved prob- lems, including the problem of Multi Drug Resistance Tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Indonesia ranks 9th of 27 countries that have a high load and priorities for MDR-TB/XDR. In 2008 MDR-TB cases in Indonesia has reached 6,427 cases. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of education extension to increase TB and MDR-TB knowledge inpatient suspected with MDR-TB in BBKPM Maluku province. The method used was a quasi-experimental methods, using ”separate sample pretest-posttest” design. Sampling was determined using purposive sampling, in patients with suspected MDR-TB in the BBKPM of the month January 2013 until March 2014. Samples were chosen based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria were then grouped into two, namely the control and intervention groups. The study was con- ducted from March - April 2014 in BBKPM Maluku province. Results: significant differences occurred on knowledge of TB and MDR-TB before and after counseling in the intervention group (p <0.05), whereas in the control group who did not receive counseling there was no significant difference (p> 0.05). In conclusion: increased knowledge of TB and MDR-TB through the media by means of counseling and other media outlets, should continue to be done on an ongoing basis, so as to change the behavior of TB treatment, and prevent the spread of germs that are resistant TB (MDR-TB).
