Abstract: Bread fruit plant (Artocarpus communis Forst) is * increasing role in improving the national food security. Along with the increasing number of population, bread fruit is potential to be grown if supported by the land availability, suitable environment, and climate. Genetically, bread fruit is different from kluwih, bread fruit has the chromosome arrangement of 2n = 27, 28 and 56. Although their morphology looks similar, in fact, both fruits are different in performances. Bread fruit has several varieties with high environmental adaptability, and the nutritional values in bread fruit are influenced by the genetics variability, environment, cultivation and post harvest. Thus, there is a need to conduct a systematic and guided research, from the selection of the superior variety by identification the plant type and the bread fruit quality. This research was conducted in January 2008 by survey method along the coastal area of the Ambon Island (Nusanive, Tial, Tenga-tenga, Liang and Hative Besar). The results of this research showed that: 1) the distribution of bread fruit growing area is mostly on the coastal area; 2) there are three types of bread fruit, which are different from each other in morphology and physiology due to differences in the genetics; and 3) Nusanive and Ambon Bay areas are dominated by cotton type of bread fruit, whereas hena and batu types are found only in Tial and Tenga-tenga villages. Liang village is dominated by cotton type bread fruit.
