Abstract: The study was carried out on Wai Ila catchment area, Amahusu village, district of Nusaniwe Ambon. The aim was to predict the maximum rate of surface run-off in a given period, as well as to determine the patterns of suitable land use and appropriate conservation practices in order to reduce the maximum rate of surface run-off. The method used in this study was survey with synthetic approach. Observation distance was rigid grid in which the distance within the observation lines and between the observations points were conducted according to map scale. The results showed the maximum rates of the surface run-off on the present land uses are 3.8449 m3 s-1 for the 2 years return period, 6.5040 m3 s-1 for the 5 years return period 7.4869 m3 s-1 for the 10 years return period, 8.5663 m3 s-1 for the 20 years return period, and 11.1154 m3 s-1 for the 50 years return period. Therefore, the efforts to control and reduce the maximum rates of surface run-off are to recommend land use pattern based on the slope steepness which is suitable for mixed garden and forest. Conservation practices applied to reduce the maximum rate of surface run-off are by applying vegetative and mechanic methods.
