Abstract: St 42 is a type of steel construction having a minimum tensile strength of 42 Kg / mm2 up to 50 Kg / mm2. This steel has a carbon content (C) below 0.35%, to be included in the low carbon steel. Addition of solid carbon method is the simplest way to improve the quality of steel ST 42, in order to expand its use. In the process of increasing the hardness value is used carburizing process by varying the amount of grain on solid pack carburizing. The results obtained after conducting research using a mixture of carbon (charcoal nani) by 70% and beef bones (CaCO3) at 30% of 1 Kg carburizing media with a detention time of 15 minutes. Where increasing values of force for a grain size of 40.73 mm catalyst 1 HRC, catalyst 3 grain size of 42.98 mm and the catalyst grain size of 5 mm by 43.35 HRC. Research has shown that the use of local media in this regard Beef Bones (CaCO3) can be used as an alternative catalyst BaCO3 (Barium carbonate) in Solid carburizing process where the rate of increase in the average value of the greatest violence occurred in the catalyst grain size of 5 mm by 2.89 or 35.90%. so that Beef Bones (CaCO3) can be used as an alternative to BaCO3 (Barium carbonate).
