Abstract: Adaptation study of 10 lines/varieties composite and hybrid maize was conducted, aiming to get the adaptive lines/varieties on dryland farming agroecosystem in Maluku. The location of study was in Waipirit Village, Kairatu Sub-district, Seram District on farmers land by involving the participation of farmers. The investigation was arranged in Completely Randomized Block design with 3 replications. Ten composite and hybrid pre-eminent lines/varieties and 2 local varieties were tested for adaptation. The area of study plot was 4 m x 5 m and the distance between treatment plots was 1.5 m. Plant spacing applied was 75 cm x 40 cm (2 plants/hole). Lines/varieties studied were Sukmaraga, Srikandi Kuning, Bisma, Palakka, B 11209, MR-14, NE I, MR-4, Local Ungu and Lokal Pulut Putih. Fertilizers were given in holes (sidedress application) with distance around 5-7 cm from plant stem. The doses of fertilizers were 300 kg ha-1 Urea, 200 kg ha-1 SP-36, 100 kg ha-1 KCl, and 2 t ha-1 manure. Urea was applied twice, that is 100 kg urea and all SP-36 and KCl at 7 days after planting (DAP) and the rest of urea (200 kg) was applied after 30 DAP. Manure was applied at the last soil tillage, as much as 2 t ha-1. Parameter observed were the percentage of growing plant, plant height, cob height, age of male flowering > 50%, age of female flowering > 50%, cob length, cob weight, weight of 100 dry seeds, yield of maize and the number of plants with disease/pest attack. Other data required was preference of consumers and farmers to pre-eminent line/variety, rainfall data during the study, and other supporting data. Agronomy data was analysed statistically and the value differences between treatments was done by t test. Results of this research indicated that the composite pre-eminent varieties showed better growth and yield components compared to the yield of local lines and varieties. Sukmaraga variety gave highest yield (12.02 t ha-1), followed by Palakka, Srikandi Kuning, and Bisma varieties as much as 9.91 t ha-1, 9.63 t ha-1, and 8.26 t ha-1 respectively. The expected lines which have prospect for acceleration of release as high yielding varieties were NE I, MR-14 and B11209 because the yield was above the average national maize yield, as much as 8.17, 7.49, and 4.65 t ha-1, respectively.
