Abstract: | Surface gillnets used by fishermen in Kayeli Bay were constructed from polyethylene (PE) mono filaments number 25 (mesh size 1,5 inch and 1,75 inch) with shortening value of 45 % and net height of 280 mz. The main target of fishing is Mackeral Scad ( Decapterus macarelus) using gillnet operated in Fish Aggregation Device (FDA) at night. Research on gillnets recently is more focused on efficiency to get maximum fishing yield; as well as selectifity level to obtain optimum size of the targeted fish. The aim of this research is to investigate fishing efficiency of surface gillnets with different designs (mesh size and shortening value). Analysis of variance shows that mesh size and shorthening values affect the fishing yields of Mackeral Scad (Decapterus macarelus). Mesh size 1,75 inch was more efficient to catch Mackeral Scad ( Decapterus macarelus) compared to mesh size 1,5 inch and 2,0 inch. Furthermore shorthening value of 45% was more effiecient than that of 30%. |
