Abstract: Background. Factor that plays a role in ischemic stroke disease is thrombosis, since hyperactivity of platelet function may increase platelet aggregation. Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) is an index of platelet volume, if there is an increase may reflect increased platelet activation and platelet hyperaggregation. Objective. To assess the level of PDW, the percentage of the amplitude of platelet aggregation and to prove whether there is a correlation between PDW and platelet aggregation in ischemic stroke patients. Methods. Patients with ischemic stroke who were treated at RSUP. Dr. Kariadi Semarang, age 20-80 years (male and female), September 2012-March 2013. Examination with a Beckman Coulter hematology autoanalyzer, impedance method. TAT turbidimetri method of Born. Results. Samples 40, 25 men (62.5%) and 15 women (37.5%). Mean of age 60 years, (of 20-80 years). Mean of platelet is 266,3 thousand/mm3, mean of PDW is16,28 fl. There is a positive correlation between the platelets and platelet aggregation (r = 0.317 p = 0.0467), no significant negative correlation between PDW and platelet aggregation (p = 0.375 and p = 0.757) both ADP 2 and ADP 10 stimulation. Conclusion. There is no correlation between PDW and platelet aggregation.
