| Abstract: | Poverty is a crucial problem of disadvantage rural communities. However, it remains unknown what factors are associated with poverty level and its reduction strategies. The objectives of this study were to determine the number of poor households, to determine influencing factors associated with poverty households and to find out the reduction strategies for poverty. This research was conducted by using purposive sampling method, and the number of the samples was selected as much as 20 percent (49 people) of the 245 heads of farmer's household. Primary data was obtained through indepth interview and direct observation, while secondary data was collected from Sawai Village Office and local goverment office associated with this research. Research results showed that poverty in Sawai Village can be categorized as follows (69%) destitude, (10%) poorest, (10%) poor and (10%) not poor. Based on household expenditure, 79 percent of household expenditure was used for food and the rest allocated for non-food. The main factors influencing poverty were age, number of family dependent and cultivated land area. Therefore, strategies to reduce poverty were utilizing new technology and innovation to increase farmer's institutional knowledge, as well as the development and provision of capital for the farmers. |
