Abstract: In addition to staple foods based on rice, wheat, corn, potatoes and soybeans, food diversification to people on the small islands needs to be developed and utilized the biological diversity of native plants. On one hand, small islands is usually a place blocking by lowest access and highest transportation costs of food distribution, and another hand, people need to alive. So, the selection of plants can be done by re-emphasize local food crops that are not interested and neglected. View of society need to be excited and communicated to re-empower native crops that can be found growing on their surrounding environment. If the available raw materials and application of appropriate food technologies, this effort will provide community food self-sufficiency so that they remain alive in the small village of the island without having to move to big cities on the other islands. Plants breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis Park) is a plant that chance as an alternative food crop in diversification of diet on small islands communities. Breadfruit has good agronomic parameters and characteristics of ecophysiology. By this paper, we comprehensively discuss the opportunities and benefits of developing the breadfruit as a food crop that is considered suitable for the small islands.
