Abstract: Assessment of performance and yield potential of some lowland rice varieties/lines was carried out in Tanah Merah village, North Seram Sub District, Central Moluccas District. Location of the research was the new lowland rice field where first cultivation was done in October 2008 with average yield around 2 t ha-1 (Cigeulis cultivar). Soil nutrient status was very high N, medium P and low K contents, while soil pH was slightly acid and soil texture is loamy sand. 15 varieties/lines of lowland rice was studied, consisted of 2 hybrid varieties (Hipa 5 Cepa and Hipa 6 Jete), 11 new high yield varieties (Inpari 1, Inpari 6 Jete, Ciapus, Maros, Sarinah, Cibogo, Cigeulis, Mekongga, Aek Sibundong, Conde, Ciherang), and 2 lines (IR 6510-24-3-6-3-2-3-1 and BP 1550-16-21-1), and Ciherang variety as a check. This research was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications, the size of the plots were 4 m x 8 m, the plant spacing was 40 cm (20 cm x 20 cm), direct seeded system by legowo 4:1. Fertilizers dosages were 300 kg ha-1 NPK Phonska and 200 kg ha-1 urea. The research took place from August until November 2009. The purpose of this research was to know the performance and yield potential of some varieties/lines on new lowland rice field and to get the highly adaptable superior variety/line in the specific location. Results indicated that the crops age ranged from 100-115 days, were resistant to collapse and pest/disease, except the Cibogo variety. New high yield variety of Sarinah gave highest yield (6.52 t ha-1) and was significantly different from other varieties, followed by VUB Inpari 6 Jete and hybrid Hipa 5 Ceva, yielded 5.19 t ha-1 and 4.89 t ha-1, respectively. One of the two lines yielded higher compared to Ciherang (3.70 t ha-1) was IR 6510-24-3-6-3-2-3-1 (4.44 t ha-1). These varieties have potential prospects to be developed. Management of new lowland rice field in reducing the toxicity risk of iron can be done through management of drainage, amelioration and fertilization, and the use of tolerant varieties.
