Abstract: Disease monitoring to observe the development of rice sheath blight caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn was conducted in Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces in the dry season 2009 and rainy season 2010. * at Wonosobo-Cilacap transect and in Yogyakarta at Sleman-Bantul transect were selected as the site of disease assessment. Disease severity was measured on short and tall type of rice varieties. Observations indicated that sheath blight disease was always found in areas of intensive rice agriculture. Sheath blight thrived in area of 0-200 m above the sea level and developed more severe disease on rice varieties of the semidwarf high yielding. Increase in conductivity and pH of the soil caused a decrease in disease severity, whereas the increase in temperature and humidity environment of plants caused an increase in severity.
