Abstract: Ela sago is the waste of sago pith after processing its starch. The waste is generally dumped on the river edge, near the sago starch extraction place. For industrial-scale processing, the waste generated each day can reach 3 to 5 tons after processing between 8-12 trees. Researchs on utilization of sago waste have been already done, such as for animal feed, mushroom cultivation planting medium, and as raw material for organic fertilizer (compost). In contrast, the research about the impact of piled sago pith waste on the river edge on the quality of water resources and on the health of people living around the sago processing place, has not been much conducted. River water were sampled at several points i.e before and after piled sago waste, and in the community wells for comparison. Water quality analysis was focused on the chemical and physical quality, according to the water quality standards (Minister of Health Decree 416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990 dated 3 September 1990) while the microbiological analysis was limited to coliform bacteria. The results showed that the water quality of the river was still below the limit of standard quality, however bad physical quality was found, i.e. smelly and not clear water, and it had affected the health of people who used the water for washing laundry and bathing, i.e they got itchiness.
